The start of the 2016-17 Gridiron West season happened over the weekend with some great action happening north and south of the river with a first for the league, split grounds. This will be happening for the first 7 rounds so make sure you read the fixtures carefully so you don’t end up in the wrong place!
League favourites the Claremont Jets came away with a win against the Wolverines, no doubt hoping to set in motion a plan to avenge their Junior West Bowl results from last season against the Vipers. While that was going on, south of the river down in Rockingham, the Saints and Broncos kicked their season off, the Saints coming away eventual winners at 14-0. The last game of the Under 19s had a semi-final replay happen with the Vipers vs Blitz, this time the Blitz finishing on top with a 12-22 victory. Zac Wood of the Blitz streaking away at the top of the scoreboard with 16 points, a lead that will no doubt shrink as some other stars come back from injury and/or other commitments.
Saints 14-0 Broncos
Vipers 12-22 Blitz
The senior portion of the league got rolling in similar fashion, except the difference being the senior Vipers got their win, extending their unbeaten streak to 28 games with a 12-0 win. The Broncos emulated their Under 19s brethren by repeating the scoreline while north of the river up in Forrest Park, the Jets put up a solid 38-12 win over the Wolverines, finishing the round in top spot.
Saints 14-0 Broncos
Vipers 12-0 Blitz
Round 2 starts on Saturday at lunchtime with the early matchup being the Saints v Blitz at Anniversary Park, The Saints will be looking to extend their dominance over the Blitz, having not lost to them since Round 14 of the 2013-14 season. The Wolverines host the Broncos up at Forrest Park for the middle games, both will be wanting to get some positive points on the board after both posted up zeroes in all but the junior Wolverines game. Finally, the Steelers get a chance to participate in the league after spectating the first round, looking to put a Jets club to the sword after a winning first round for the boys in green.
Please note, the fixtures posted at the end of last week had a small date mistake for Round 2, which had everyone playing on Friday. This has now been fixed up, rest assured we’re still on for Saturday.
