Round 1: Whether you’re North or South, the games are nearby

The start of the 2016-17 Gridiron West season happened over the weekend with some great action happening north and south of the river with a first for the league, split grounds. This will be happening for the first 7 rounds so make sure you read the fixtures carefully so you don’t end up in the wrong place!

Under 19s

League favourites the Claremont Jets came away with a win against the Wolverines, no doubt hoping to set in motion a plan to avenge their Junior West Bowl results from last season against the Vipers. While that was going on, south of the river down in Rockingham, the Saints and Broncos kicked their season off, the Saints coming away eventual winners at 14-0. The last game of the Under 19s had a semi-final replay happen with the Vipers vs Blitz, this time the Blitz finishing on top with a 12-22 victory. Zac Wood of the Blitz streaking away at the top of the scoreboard with 16 points, a lead that will no doubt shrink as some other stars come back from injury and/or other commitments.

The Broncos emulated their Under 19s brethren by repeating the scoreline while north of the river up in Forrest Park, the Jets put up a solid 38-12 win over the Wolverines, finishing the round in top spot.
